Yesterday Earth Day enthusiasts celebrated its 40th Anniversary by participating in the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association’s (TCHTA) 2nd Annual “TCI Shines’’ environmental cleanup campaign.

The dedicated volunteers joined the TCHTA along various areas around Grace Bay Road, Lower Bight and Leeward Highway and were successful in gathering hundreds of bags of litter during the cleanup campaign. Participants included Beaches, Alexandra, Seven Stars, Grace Bay Club, Club Med, Comfort Suites, Ocean Club, Royal West Indies, The Sands, The Palms, The Somerset, PPC Ltd and members of the community.

Karen Whitt, President of the TCHTA said, “ TCI Shines allows us to do our part to promote a healthy sustainable environment throughout the TCI and is also part of TCHTA’s ongoing commitment to encouraging social responsibility. TCHTA would like to thank everyone who came out early and participated.”

Ms. Whitt added “Even though we are happy with the number of bags collected we are encouraging all persons to desist from littering our islands. The only way TCI can continue to be beautiful by Nature is if we all practise to keep our surroundings clean, not only on Earth Day but every single day of the year.”

This year the DECR and TCI Waste Disposal Services continued their partnership with the TCHTA by not only participating in the cleanup, but also supported the team on the road and collected and disposed of the garbage from the various check points.

The TCHTA expressed a special thank you to those companies who sponsored and supported ‘TCI Shines’: Hotel members, the DECR, TCI Waste Disposal Services, PPC Ltd, Pizza Pizza and Miss. Earth.
