TCHTA Recaps 2008 And Plans For 2009
The first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Turks and Caicos Islands Hotel & Tourism Association (TCHTA) was held on January 13th. The meeting covered a host of areas that currently affect the Turks and Caicos Islands tourism industry and outlined the way forward in 2009. Caesar Campbell, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) highlighted the accomplishments and projects in 2008 and discussed the plans and activities for 2009 to increase the island’s visibility in its major market sources and potential markets. The record high oil prices, the passage of Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike, and the global economic crisis influenced a 9% decrease in hotel occupancy rates from 2007. To address and improve the island’s occupancy rate, the Association will pursue an earnest advertising and marketing co-operative effort in conjunction with hoteliers and major international publications. The association will also conduct Sales Blitz in North America and attend various international industry trade shows throughout the year. The TCHTA will continue to work closely with the Tourist Board on its marketing efforts. Karen Whitt, incoming President of the TCHTA stressed the importance of the membership and organizations working closely together “to strengthen the Turks & Caicos Islands brand and to combat the current challenges facing the industry.” The association’s Education and Training Committee, has been active in many tourism educational and training programs in 2008, and plans to continue in this effort in 2009.
