« 28-04-2009 »‘TCI SHINES’ FOR EARTH DAY

PROVIDENCALES, Turks and Caicos Islands: Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 – Today volunteers for the TCHTA ‘TCI Shines’ environmental cleanup, smashed their target to collect 500 bags of garbage and instead gathered almost 700 bags of litter around Providenciales.

Over 150 hotel employees, school children, local businesses and members of the community, rolled up their sleeves this morning at 8am to be a part of the ‘TCI Shines’ campaign which coincided with the internationally recognized environmental campaign Earth Day. Miss Earth, Sessily Pratt was there to spur on the ten teams who were each assigned to the various target areas around Grace Bay Road, Lower Bright, Leeward Highway and Millennium Highway.

DECR, partners for the cleanup provided tremendous support - their team not only participated in the cleanup, but provided the venue and on-road support for the event. The Environmental Health Department organized the garbage collection from the various checkpoints. The cleanup crews hit the streets until 11am – the teams then reconvened at the Bight Park for an informal lunch.

Karen Whitt, President of the TCHTA was thrilled with the campaign’s success, “We are overwhelmed by the response the ‘TCI Shines’ campaign has received so far and absolutely delighted that we were able to smash our target. Today was the launch of what we hope is just the beginning of an environmental awareness initiative that the local community will embrace. It aims to educate and energize the population to take action to secure a healthy future for the Turks & Caicos Islands and its children. It was evident from today’s attendance, support and general interest that hotels, businesses and the community are enthusiastic and willing to be a part of ensuring that the islands continue to live up to its name, ‘Beautiful By Nature’.”

The TCHTA would like to thank the organizations who sponsored and supported ‘TCI Shines’: Hotel members, DECR, Department of Environmental Health, TC Disposal Services, Tourist Board, Turks & Caicos Real Estate Association, American Airlines, Miss. Earth, Miss Turks & Caicos 2009, The Best Institute and Sky Juice. Caesar Campbell, CEO of the TCHTA praised the support of the private and public sector for coming together for the 1st TCI Shines Campaign. “It is important that we all work together for the betterment of our community and the islands. The work cannot be accomplished by one group and the joining of forces will make any initiative more successful”.
