EARTH DAY 2009
TCHTA APPEALS TO MEMBERS TO HELP ‘TCI SHINE’ FOR EARTH DAY

In recognition of Earth Day, the Turks & Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) is organizing an environmental clean-up day in Providenciales on Wednesday, 22nd April between the hours of 8am and 11am.

The TCHTA is appealing to its members, to volunteer staff and combine forces to work together to form cleanup crews. Miss Earth, Sessily Pratt will be joining one of the eight teams who will be assigned to the various target areas around Grace Bay Road, Lower Bright, Leeward Highway and Millennium Highway.

Earth Day was founded on the premise that all people, regardless of race, gender, income or geography, have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment. The Earth Day Network has a global reach with a network of more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries. More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world.

Volunteers, donations of garbage bags, gloves and bottle water are needed for the teams to reach the goal of collecting 500 bags of litter. The DECR will be on hand to assist and the Environmental Health Department has offered to collect the rubbish from the various check points. The cleanup crews will then meet at the new Children’s Bight Park at 12 noon, after the cleanup to participate in a brief presentation and lunch.

Karen Whitt, President of the TCHTA has spearheaded the campaign, “We fully support promoting a healthy and sustainable environment for residents and visitors alike. We were thrilled to introduce the ‘TCI Shines’ campaign and this year’s Earth Day seemed like a good time to begin. The cleanup program aims to educate and energize the population to take action to secure a healthy future for the Turks & Caicos Islands and its children. We hope that this event is just the beginning, and that this will only inspire our members and the community, to ensure that the islands continue to live up to its name, ‘Beautiful By Nature’.”

Members and Allied Members can be involved by contacting the TCHTA on 649-941-5787 or emailing kwhitt@thesomerset.com, to confirm how many members of staff can participate and how their organization can support or donate to the cause.

About the TCHTA The Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) represents a wide range of members from hotels and resorts to insurance companies and financial service providers, from watersports operators to catering outlets, from taxi drivers to human resources. The Association aims to assist the organizations through networking opportunities, training, promotional activities and representation at all levels of decision-making in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the region.
