TCHTA Attends International Luxury Travel Market Event Where “Responsible Tourism” Took Center Stage

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands – January 18, 2008 – Representatives of the Turks & Caicos Hotel Association (TCHTA) along with members of the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board and the Premier, Hon. Michael Misick attended the sixth International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), which took place in Cannes in December and included over 3,000 luxury travel industry leaders.

Environmental topics took center stage at the event where the opening session on climate change, which highlighted the need for the luxury travel industry to embrace the challenge of responsible tourism in order to survive and progress, attracted an unprecedented audience of 750 delegates.

With the size of the travel industry set to double in the next 15 years, keynote speaker Costas Christ, founder of The International Ecotourism Society, emphasized the need for luxury travel companies to embrace the climate change issue. “We’re on the frontier of something new - responsible tourism is not a possibility but a reality and is a sound business approach.”

“Attending ILTM has been extremely productive for us as it attracts luxury travel market leaders from around the world,” said Mr. Caesar Campbell, CEO of the TCHTA.   “The trends and issues discussed were insightful, especially as we aggressively pursue an expansion into the European market and with our emphasis on environmentally-friendly development.”

Sponsored by Departures magazine, the Conference illustrated that a growing number of luxury travel companies are making progress in the area of responsible tourism through a variety of environmental projects.  New research by ILTM was also revealed that the luxury travel industry as a whole is booming, with huge growth in developing markets such as India, Russia and China.  The global luxury travel industry now comprises an estimated 25 million annual arrivals accounting for 25% of international tourism spending.

ILTM 2007 welcomed over 3,500 attendees from 110 countries worldwide.
